This remains my favorite sushi restaurant in Austin. Maybe in Texas altogether. Had yellowtail, escolar, salmon nigiri and the Geisha roll. Same quality it has been since I first came here over a decade ago.

Solo diner, first timer at this Japanese restaurant. Comfortable and relaxing environment. Enjoyed the Geisha roll and Poker face roll. The clean, fresh flavors were wonderful. White fish melted in my mouth. Poker face is 2 separate rolls in one. One is a fried diamond shape with jalapeño, cream cheese spicy fish and crab. The other rolled with rice and fish inside. House dressing is hand made and the best I have had. Jasmine tea was hot and calming. I will be back!

We’ve been to Maru many times over the years and appreciate the mom and pop nature of the place. The lady that runs the service is always sweet and the chef provides good portions of fish with rolls. We’ve been here when it’s slow and busy. When it’s slow the service is attentive but not hovering. because there’s just one lady taking orders, filling drinks and cleaning tables service can be a bit slow during high volume times but that’s to be expected and we haven’t minded it much since it encourages us to not rush through dinner and have good conversations. The restaurant is always clean and I love the paintings on the wall, wish I would have taken some photos of them for this review! Also appreciate the little cheesecake bites they give as dessert at the end, nice touch that you don’t get anywhere else.

Lead by great reviews, I decided to try it. Portions are not small, but not huge either. The same piece of sushi might be significantly different in size and contents. Not cool especially if you share the roll. One of the rolls, that came with shrimp tempura inside was missing the shrimp in 3 pieces (in the middle) the shrimp felt like it was cooked 2 days ago. The eel looked and tasted awful. I always order rolls with eel at sushi restaurants and I cook it at home as well. It was not even shiny as it should be and moist. Wouldn’t eat it another time for free. None of the fish felt very fresh. Maybe I’m spoiled with almost every sushi place being great in San Francisco? Service ok Even though, we waited VERY long for our order! There was only one other single person in the restaurant. The plates they serve sushi on should be in trash long time ago. All chipped. No complimentary green tea But they give you 2 small pieces of frozen cheesecake (pretty good) Will definitely not be back

A friend treated me to a belated birthday dinner. I picked this place out. This was mine and my friend's first time first time eating here. We both really enjoyed our food. We had gyoza for an appetizer and I had the chicken katsu dor my entrée. Yum! 😋 The service was great and I liked the decor. It was a quaint restaurant.
